Caroline Silva's Biography

updated.jpg

Caroline Silva is an Atlanta-based reporter who moved from São Paulo, Brazil when she was 7-years-old. Caroline wanted to better connect with her Latin American audience, so she pushed herself to learn Spanish to be fluent in three major languages.

Caroline is a rising senior at Emory University pursuing a dual BA degree in English and philosophy. Although passionate about journalism, Emory does not offer a journalism degree. Caroline has nevertheless used her academic skills in her story telling. She focuses on the pragmatism of William James and African American poetry from the New Negro Renaissance and is currently working on an Honors Thesis connecting the two topics. She is also currently pursuing her English MA at Emory University Laney Graduate School, where she will be expanding on her Honors Thesis to turn into a Master Thesis.

Caroline never knew journalism would become her dream career, but after joining The Emory Wheel her freshmen year, she fell in love with telling stories and making sure her audience knew the truth in every situation. She began writing for the Feature section at the Wheel and later became the editor. She eventually moved on to become Managing Editor of the Opinion and Feature sections. Caroline now serves as a Copy Editor.

As a current reporter at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Caroline writes for the Breaking News and Crime and Public Safety teams. Wanting to expand on her news reporting, she has been in constant contact with city officials, police and family members who have lost loved one. Caroline has been focusing on articles that notify the public of danger and news regarding those charged with crimes. She has been actively going to crime scenes to report on breaking news on a quick turnaround schedule. She has also worked on longer stories where she directly speaks to individuals after major events to show how the larger community has been impacted and how authorities can do better.

Caroline has previously reported for The Orlando Weekly, where she primarily focused on investigative and feature articles. She interned during summer 2020 when COVID-19 struck, which naturally led her to write about those impacted by the pandemic and the police brutality protests happening in her former hometown of Orlando. Her work at the time reached hundreds of thousands as she uncovered the reality of policing and unrest in the midst of COVID-19.
